Agmark Certification in Jharkhand- India is a country where agriculture plays a vital role, being one of the largest exporters in the world of agricultural produce and products. In this regard, the Agmark certification becomes almost a necessity so as to assure the public regarding the authenticity and quality of the products. In order to compete in the international markets, the grading standards are fixed, keeping in mind the requirements of the World Trade Organization. The products bearing the Agmark insignia must conform to the standards laid down by Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), and any contravention in this regard may require free replacement of graded products by the producer.

AGMARK is a certification mark for agricultural products that ensures it meets the quality standards set by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperatives and Farmer Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare in agricultural production (Classification Mark) Act of 1937. Standards it distinguishes quality and assigns 2-3 values ​​to each product. To date, quality standards have been socialized for 222 agricultural commodities. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, vegetable oils, vegetable oils, ghee, spices, honey, butter cream, oats, ata, besan and more.

Although the certification scheme is by nature voluntary, the 2011 Food Safety Regulations and Standards (Prohibitions and Restrictions on Sales) mandates mandatory AGMARK certification for certain products, viz. A mixture of vegetable vegetable oils, fats. In the case of Til Oil, Carbia Callosa, Honey Dew, Tea and Ghee, the FSSAI has imposed some conditional restrictions.

Agmark certification serves as a measure of quality and is synonymous with assurance of product authenticity. Agmark is regulated by the Agricultural Production (Classification and Identification) Act 1937 (amended 1986). Agmark’s standards currently cover approximately 222 agricultural products, including grains, nuts, vegetable oils and other semi-finished products. Agmark certifications are mostly voluntary certifications, unless specifically required under the Food Safety Regulations and Standards (Prohibitions and Restrictions on Sales).

AGMARK is a brand certified by the Government of India for all agricultural products under the Agricultural Production (Classification and Marking) Act 1937 and the 1987 Amendment, which guarantees its good quality and standards. It is a combination of two words namely AG and MARK. AG means agriculture and MARK means certificate

Document authenticating the establishment of the firm, such as the registration certificate.

  • Memorandum of Association, in case of a Limited Company.
  • Partnership Deed, in case of a Partnership Firm.
  • Name and postal address of the business, contact details included.
  • The full address of the premises where the grading and certification will be carried out.
  • Name of the commodities to be graded.
  • Period for which the applicant has been in business.
  • A copy of the test report which is duly authenticated, from an independent Agmark recognized laboratory.
  • Sachets of the product samples to be submitted.
  • Turnover details of the previous year.
  • Total Gross Product for the previous year (in Kgs).

Importance of the Agmark certification

Agriculture plays a vital role in India. It is also one of the largest exported of agricultural produce and agri-based products in the world. The Agmark certification becomes an absolute necessity in this regard. It provided the much-needed assurance to the public regarding the quality and authenticity of the products they are using. This certification ensures that the agricultural products conform to the set of standards approved by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), a Government of India agency. These standards also bear conformity to the requirements of the WTO (World Trade Organisation). Therefore, the Agmark certification helps a product to compete in the international markets as well.

Application Process for the Agmark Registration

  • The person/ company may either access the website or visit the nearest office of the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) in order to get the required application form. Form – A specifies the application for grant of Certificate of Authorisation for Grading and Marking of commodities for the domestic market.
  • Along with the application form, the necessary documents shall be annexed and enclosed along with the prescribed application fee in accordance with the nature of the commodity for which the application is being filed. The registration fee is to be submitted in the form of demand draft, and it will vary based on several independent variable factors as stated in the forms and its annexures which includes grading charges, processing fees, etc. to name a few.
  • In order to be eligible for grading and certifying a notified commodity under Agmark:-
  • The person must have the necessary infrastructure to process the commodity.
  • The person must have access to an approved laboratory for grading or must have their own laboratory.

Only if these conditions are met, the person may apply to the office of the DMI for grant of Certificate of Authorization, which will be granted once the verification process is complete which takes about 30-40 days (approx.).

  • Where the person is granted access to an approved laboratory, the consent letter of the laboratory approved under Agmark must also be furnished in Form A-3.
  • Prior to packing the commodity in containers, the testing of the raw material and the processed commodity will be carried out by an approved Chemist.
  • Regular checks will be conducted by the field officers of the DMI with regard to the commodity graded and certified by comparing samples from the packer’s premises with those in the market.
  • The renewal of the Certificate of Authorization may be made for Rs. 5000 in Form A-4.

Qus:-Where is the quality testing for Agmark conducted?

The quality testing for Agmark is conducted in the Central Agmark Laboratory as well as in different state owned laboratories across the country. Such tests include microbiological analysis, chemical analysis, aflatoxin analysis and testing for pesticide residue. These state-owned laboratories act both as the testing and certifying centres. The Central Agmark Laboratory is situated at Nagpur. Also, there are Regional Agmark Laboratories situated in 11 cities – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Kanpur, Amritsar, Guntur, Bhopal, Jaipur and Rajkot.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of any product with Agmark certification, you can lodge a complaint with the Agricultural Marketing Adviser. With your complaint, you need to furnish the following –

  • Agmark label or the Replica Serial Number
  • Lot number
  • Packing date
  • Best before date
  • Brand name
  • Name and address of authorised seller
  • Name and address of authorised packer
  • The authority will check the genuineness of your complaint. On being satisfied, they will initial action against the packer, as deemed fit. The packer will also be directed to replace the item to you free of cost.
